Walker Concepts has designed several mechanical additions and improvements for The Medical University of South Carolina. These projects include the award winning mechanical tower, an electrical substation surrounded by a decorative enclosure and a chiller replacement perched atop an existing high rise in downtown Charleston. Each of these designs proves that even a utilitarian structure can be beautiful.
The 4-story mechanical tower was so successful that it set the architectural language for all future structures on campus.
The chiller replacement was critical in that the building’s prominence in the city’s skyline required a design that would quell some of the rooftop disharmony and random equipment placement that had been subject to criticism. The design reinterprets the existing high barrel vaulted roof and chimney design into subsidiary, lower barrel vaults and chimney like elements at each side of the central penthouse.
