    Charleston, SC

A vacant lot in Charleston’s historic district is rare, and a corner lot even less common.  As such, the owner requested a four-story structure with emphasis at the street intersection.  The design is derived in part from the unusual geometry of the site and from the surrounding context.

The main circulation elements and two fourth-floor condominiums are set back from the Street to minimize the building’s height and allow for rooftop terraces.  Like much of Charleston, the solid walls are smooth lime stucco with punch openings.  The contrasting curved glass corner helps activate the interior of the building and draw emphasis to the store entrance.
